The festive season is here! It is the time to celebrate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It is the season of lights, sweets, but also, well, stubborn stains. So, when you get dressed in your best ethnic outfit and accidentally ruin it with obstinate and unexpected stains, here are some expert tips that’ll save the day. Save this post for later. You will thank us :)
Oil
Cooking up the festive food or lighting up your house with diyas - oil stains are easy to catch and hard to get rid of, but not to worry.
First step in removing oil stains is to scrape off as much grease from the fabric as possible. Make use of a dry towel to blot the fabric and remove any excess oil from your clothes.
Second step is to soak the stain in liquid dish soap and let it sit for around 10 mins. Now run the stain down under clean water and make sure that no residue remains.
Lastly, throw the cloth into the wash cycle in warm water and air dry the fabric instead of putting it into the dryer.
Repeat the same steps if needed, and don’t forget to check the wash care label for any special instructions.
Rangoli colours
Showing off your creative skills and adorning your house with a rangoli sounds exciting. But it could also mean a messy affair that could leave your clothes stained in multiple shades and colours. The trick here is to take action at the earliest and to not allow the colour to soak in.
Start with cleaning off the fabric with a damp towel and rub lime juice directly over the stain.
Let it sit for 12–15 mins and then run it under the tap to get rid of the stain completely.
Do not repeat this step multiple times as it may fade the fabric.
Lastly, put the cloth through a wash cycle, separate from your clean clothes and air dry the fabric to avoid fading.
Henna (a.k.a. mehendi)
Henna is every brown girl’s best friend, but the worst enemy when it comes to your clothes. Always remember to wash off the stain under water as soon as possible.
Now, to treat the fresh stain, get yourself some lukewarm milk and dip the stained fabric into the milk and keep the fabric submerged for half an hour.
Now take the fabric out and scrub the stain with a few drops of liquid detergent and throw it into laundry cycle.
Make-up
A make-up mishap is the worst nightmare of every girl. Don’t panic because we have you covered.
Get yourself an alcohol based hairspray and splash it over the stain. Remember to not overdo this step or it may harm the fabric.
Let the hairspray dry out, then clean it with a wet wipe. Don’t forget to put the cloth through the laundry at the earliest.
Vermillion ( a.k.a kumkum or sindoor)
Accidentally spilled that bright red kumkum or vermillion over your clothes? This one is easy to clean, all you need is white vinegar and dishwashing liquid.
Take 2 tbsp of vinegar and 1 tbsp of dishwashing liquid into a bowl. Soak the fabric into this mix and leave it for at least 30 mins. Rinse with cold water and see the stain disappear.
Always remember that some fabrics like silk and wool require extra care and it’s best to read the wash care label to keep the fabric fresh.
