Looking at a tailor’s workplace, you’ll see a variety of scissors with different sizes and shapes. Ever wondered what they are for? We’ll explain all the cutting essentials used in the production of a garment and why you need them for your fabric project.

Rotary Cutter

A Rotary cutter is a spring-loaded circular razor blade that is attached to a handle that goes well with a rotary mat. It is a sewing essential because of its versatile nature. It is able to cut through leather, paper, and multiple layers of fabric.

Embroidery Scissors

Embroidery requires precision and accuracy. That is why it requires a functional and sharp pair of scissors that can contribute to the details of embroidery. Embroidery Scissors are 3–6 inches long with sharp edges, used to cut off the extra threads in embroidery work.

Pinking Shears

Pinking Shears have zigzag edges that create a pattern on the fabric while cutting it. These scissors are necessarily used to cut off the seam of a garment, preventing it from unraveling. You can also use them for cutting the edges of fabric before washing to reduce excessive fraying.

Applique Scissors

These scissors are used to cut close to the fabric, preventing the fabric from possible damage. Applique Scissors are ideal for applique work and rug making. They’re designed in such a way that the blades push away the bottom layer of the fabric, providing flawless, controlled cuts close to the stitches.

Dressmaking Scissors

Dressmaker’s shears have two kinds of blades, one blade is pointed while the other blade is blunt. The blunt edge prevents the scissor from damaging the fiber while the pointed one cuts the material quickly. Dressmaking scissors are also suitable when you want to cut several layers of fabric at the same time without damaging the fabric.

Tailor’s Scissors

These scissors are short in length with sharp edges and heavyweight. They can cut through fabrics like velvet, denim, and leather with ease. Due to the short size of these scissors, they’re portable and easy to handle.

All-purpose Scissors

These are the most common types of scissors. Ideally, they’re not used to cut fabrics, but for cutting patterns because of their sharp blades. All-purpose Scissors are perfect for cutting in small areas.

The efforts and skills that go into pattern making and fabric making are uncanny. Despite the wide range of tools available, it’s the craftsmanship of a professional that contributes towards the final product.
